In celebration of the 50th anniversary of Sogetsu Ikebana Bay Area Branch, I performed a large-scale calligraphy「花鳥風月」-Beauties of Nature- in collaboration with an improvisational dance, accopanied by a live shakuhachi. I wrote「花鳥風月」across four sheets of 143cm x 143cm / 56" x 56" Japanese gasen-shi paper mounted on metal rods in a scroll style, laid out on the floor. Finished artworks were raised up and presented to the audiences by the members of Jiten Daiko, and then fixed on a backdrop stand with steel bases for a display as part of the performance.
This 20 minutes performance was accompanied by an improvisational dance movements by Galen Rogers and shakuhachi by Kevin Chen. Special thanks to John Rogers for organizing another wonderful occasion to collaborate. Photography by Dave Golden.
